A WestJet flight from the U.K. to Edmonton has made a safe emergency landing in Iceland, after diverting due to a mechanical issue.
WestJet Flight 27 diverted to Reykjavik Saturday morning due to a mechanical issue, interrupting its path from Gatwick to Edmonton. The flight landed “normally,” according WestJet spokesperson Lauren Stewart.
“We expect the aircraft will remain in Iceland pending maintenance,” Stewart said in an email statement to CTV News.
Passengers are being accomodated with hotel rooms and meal vouchers, and will be rebooked on flights to Edmonton “as soon as possible,” Stewart said.
“WestJet sincerely apologizes to our guests for the inconvenience and asks them for their patience.”
The plane’s pilots declared an emergency “out of an abundance of caution,” Stewart said. An emergency declaration allows the plane to make a priority landing, with emergency vehicles ready to assist as necessary.
The aircraft reported trouble with its left engine and was dumping fuel before making the landing, according to flight trackers.
