A Porter Airlines de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GKQF performing flight PD-276 from Ottawa,ON to Toronto City,ON (Canada) with 22 people on board, was descending towards Toronto’s Billy Bishop City Airport when the crew entered a hold for 20 minutes due to present weather conditions. The crew subsequently decided to divert to Hamilton,ON (Canada), 36nm southwest of Toronto City Airport, however needed to go around two times due to weather conditions, declared fuel emergency and decided to divert to Toronto’s International Airport,ON (Canada), 33nm northeast of Hamilton. Enroute to Toronto International the crew requested to divert to Buffalo Niagara International,NY (USA), 55nm southeast of Hamilton, and set course to Buffalo. Enroute to Buffalo the crew saw St. Catherines Niagara Airport, decided to divert to St. Catherines Niagara District,ON (Canada), about 30nm east of Hamilton, and performed a safe visual landing about one hour after entering the hold at Billy Bishop Airport.
Canada’s TSB reported the aircraft landed with 1200lbs (545kg) of fuel remaining.
A large squall line of thunderstorms, spreading from southwest to northeast, moved eastwards that night.
