Air India flight returns to Mumbai after presumed rat spotting!

December 31, 2015 By bernard.montrel@gmail.com

A London-bound Air India flight returned to Mumbai this week after human passengers spotted a stowaway rodent on board and alerted staff.
The rat was never found, but the plane was fumigated and checked.
Delayed passengers were later flown to London on another aircraft.
The incident may have played out somewhat differently if agent Neville Flynn, aka Samuel L. Jackson of cult blockbuster Snakes on a Plane, had been on board.

It’s been an eventful week for Air India following two other incidents with their fleet.
A pilot aborted takeoff from Amritsar airport in northern India after hitting a stray dog on the runway, while a plane from Mumbai was struck by a catering van at Newark airport in the US state of New Jersey.
Air India is known to travelers for its rat issues. Vermin were spotted last year on a plane flying from New Delhi to Calcutta, an incident that sparked a YouTube song.
Earlier this year, an Air India flight from New Dehli to Milan was also forced to turn back due to a rat sighting.

Air India bans 19 students from flying with them

December 22, 2015 By bernard.montrel@gmail.com

Hyderabad: Air India barred 19 students from boarding its flight to the USA on the grounds that the two universities in which they had secured admission are under “scrutiny” of American authorities.
The national carrier asked its staff to not allow the 19 students to board its flight to San Francisco at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on Sunday night.
The students have taken admission at two San Francisco-based varsities that are currently under US government scanner, an Air India official said.
“In the past, we have witnessed that students who secured admission in those institutions have been deported to India as soon as they land there. To avoid embarrassment to them and save their money, we prevented them from boarding the flight,” the official said today.
The government-run airline is refunding the entire ticket cost to these students, the official added.
In a statement, Air India said they had on December 19 received a communication from the US Customs and Border Protection Agency that the two universities were under scrutiny and students who arrived in San Francisco were not allowed to enter the US and deported back to India.
“So far, 14 students who travelled on Air India flights to San Francisco have been deported. Students travel on a one-way ticket to the US and, in the event of deportation, incur huge expenditure to buy a ticket back to India on first available service. Further, seats are often not available on any airlines to travel back,” the statement said.
Considering the situation, students booked for travel to take admission to these universities are not being accepted on Air India flights, it further said.
The national carrier will start accepting students travelling to the US to join the two universities at no additional cost as soon as clearance is received from Air India’s US office for their travel, it added.
Meanwhile, one of the universities in question said on its website that “absolutely false” reports are being disseminated by certain media outlets and other groups that the institute has been blacklisted by the US government.
When contacted, an immigration official at the airport said that clearance for boarding a flight has to be given by the airline concerned through the issuance of boarding pass.
“The students were not issued boarding passes. It is the airline’s responsibility to clear passengers. We have nothing to do with the issue,” he said.
US Consulate officials said they are trying to gather information on the episode.

Nineteen students from Hyderabad, Krishna and Guntur districts were prevented by Air India staff from boarding a flight to San Francisco Sunday night as, officials said, two universities in which they had taken admission had been blacklisted by the US government.
Sources at the airport said that the 19 students had taken admission at Silicon Valley University in San Jose and Northwestern Polytechnic University at Fremont, California.
“Our colleagues in the US informed us that students arriving there to join the two universities were being sent back by US authorities from the airport itself as the two varsities have been blacklisted. Two batches of students who had travelled earlier were detained for several hours at airports in the US, their student visas revoked and they deported. To avoid such humiliation for the other students travelling on Sunday, we decided not to let them board,’’ an official said.
Air India has also asked its ticket counters and sales staff not to issue tickets to students travelling to California to join either of the two universities.
The students got into an altercation with the airline staff when they were stopped from boarding. Air India has offered full refund and waived all charges such as cancellation and rescheduling fee.
“Air India received a communication on December 19, 2015, from the US Customs and Border Protection agency that two universities namely Silicon Valley, San Jose, California and North Western Polytechnic College, Fremont, CA are under scrutiny and students who arrived into San Francisco were not allowed to enter the US and were deported back to India,” an Air India statement said.
US Consulate officials in Hyderabad said they are trying to get information on the episode. “As soon as we have new information, we will get back to you immediately,” an email reply from the US Consulate said.

More Dreamliner issues at Air India…

September 29, 2015 By bernard.montrel@gmail.com

Facing frequent problems with the Boeing Dreamliner planes, the engineers of national carrier Air India have urged the management to not accept any further delivery till the pending issues are resolved. The airline is awaiting six more Dreamliners of the total 27 ordered.
Reportedly, AI is losing money by the day as many planes remain grounded due to snags. The Air India Aircraft Engineers Association recently stated, “The association requests the management to put on hold further deliveries of B787s till all technical problems are resolved to the satisfaction of Air India.”
An internal route economic analysis done by AI in April showed that in the last financial year, the airline lost over Rs 1,800 crore on all international routes on which the state-of-the-art Boeing Dreamliners were operating. It was nearly half of the total loss (Rs 3,900 crore) incurred by the carrier on international routes during the period. The losses are worrying, as the Dreamliner was an important part of AI’s turn-around plan.
The carrier is reeling under a debt of over Rs 44,000 crore and is dependent upon the state grant for funds. Sources said the Dreamliners were ordered because the manufacturer had claimed that they were 20 per cent more fuel efficient. Fuel expenditure amounts to over 40% of the airline’s operational cost.
During an interview with dna last month, Dinesh Keskar, senior VP (Asia Pacific and India sales) for Boeing Commercial airplanes, had said that despite some initial snags, the airline management was satisfied with the Dreamliner’s performance. “In fact, I had a meeting with former AI CMD Rohit Nandan a few days ago, and he admitted to me that Dreamliner was now the backbone of their airline’s turn-around plan.”
