A Porter Airlines de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GLQO performing flight PD-432 from Halifax,NS to Montreal,QC (Canada) with 46 people on board, was climbing out of Halifax when smoke was observed in the cabin. A short time later a loud bang was heard and the aircraft experienced an uncommanded yaw, the engine parameters for the left hand engine (PW150) dropped. The crew stopped the climb at about 11600 feet MSL, secured the left hand engine and the smoke dissipated in the cabin. The aircraft returned to Halifax for a safe landing on runway 14 about 30 minutes after departure. Emergency services inspected the aircraft.
The Canadian TSB reported company maintenance is investigating the cause of the engine failure.
