A Krasavia Yakovlev Yak-42D, registration RA-42340 performing flight K9-501 from Sochi to Ufa (Russia) with 118 passengers and 8 crew, landed on Ufa’s runway 32R at about 06:30L (01:30Z) but overran the end of the runway by about 550 meters, went left of the localizer antenna and came to a stop at the side of a road. There were no injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage to landing gear and the left hand wing.
Volga’s Transport Investigation Department reported the aircraft landed in a strong downpour and thunderstorms when it overran the runway end by about 400 meters at 04:30 Moscow Time (06:30L/01:30Z).
Video evidence shows the aircraft came to a stop just short of the airport road about 535 meters past the runway end and 480 meters past the end of paved surface.
Passengers reported the aircraft attempted to land several times but went around each time until the last approach resulting in the overrun.
A NOTAM A3286/16 suggesting the longer runway 14R/32L was closed for repairs between Jul 28th and Aug 14th 2016 showed the status “cancelled” even before becoming effective suggesting the runway would have been available. However, NOTAMs concerning repair work came into effect after the accident.
