Icelandair Ground Services (IGS) is looking into hiring people abroad to man positions at Keflavík International Airport. IGS is one of the largest employers in the area, with 670 employees. However, many more work with the company over the summer and during the tourism season.
Svala E. Guðjónsdóttir, the manager of human resources at IGS, told the local news site Víkurfréttir that in the past the company has been able to meet the increased demand for workers during the summer by hiring students. But as the tourism season grows longer this is no longer an adequate solution. Most summer employees have to leave at the end of August to return to school when the tourism season is still in high gear.
Svala tells Víkurfréttir that despite this the company has been able to fill all positions this fall, as enough applications have arrived for openings at check-in and other passenger services, and the company was close to hiring enough staff to clean the airplanes. But as the tourism season was getting longer, with more passengers arriving during the winter months the company had to expand. “We must hire more full-time year-round employees,” Svala told Víkurfréttir.
