A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N955DL performing flight DL-2955 from Atlanta,GA to Nashville,TN (USA) with 109 people on board, was climbing out of Atlanta’s runway 26L when the crew stopped the climb at about 11,000 feet due to the failure of the right hand engine (JT8D). The crew shut the engine down and returned to Atlanta for a safe landing on runway 27R about 30 minutes after departure, vacated the runway and stopped for a check by emergency services before continuing to the apron. A landing runway inspection found debris that appeared to not originate from aircraft or runway.
A replacement MD-88 registration N908DL reached Nashville with a delay of 2 hours.
