Already after the recent anouncement of Vienna to Hong Kong route a few months ago it was written on the wall – one long haul destination has to go. With no additions to Austrian Airlines long haul fleet planned in 2016, there simply was no capacity to operate all destinations with the current equipment. Time has come and Austrian Airlines officials confirmed the runmors, announcing the end of Vienna to Tokyo route.
The route has according to the officials suffered from slowdown in the Japanese economy and de-valuation of the Yen, which in return increased competition amongst carriers for the existing passangers. This resulted in heavy losses on the route, so the carrier decided to cut it and replace it with Hong Kong. The Tokyo route will operate until September 3rd, afterwards will be cancelled without replacement. Rumors that ANA will take over the route have been denied by the representatives of the carrier.
