An ASL Airlines Hungary Boeing 737-400 on behalf of EAT Leipzig on behalf of DHL, registration HA-FAX performing freight flight QY-7332 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Milan Bergamo (Italy) with 2 crew, landed on Milan Bergamo’s Orio al Serio Airport runway 28 in thunderstorms and poor weather at 04:07L (02:07Z) but overran the runway. The aircraft broke through the airport perimeter fence, a parking lot, a guardrail and came to a stop on road 591bis towards Zanica about 580 meters past the end of the runway. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
Italy’s ANSV is investigating the occurrence.
A ground observer reported the aircraft touched down somewhere between taxiways D and G, about 1900 to 2400 meters down the runway and about 50 to 550 meters before the runway end. It appeared the crew attempted to go around, however, the aircraft did not become airborne being too slow already. The aircraft went off the paved surface of the runway, broke through the localizer antenna destroying the antenna, went through the perimeter fence, went across a parking lot and highway SS342 and came to a stop just past the highway on road 591bis. At the time of the landing there was a heavy rain shower and thunderstorms.
