Latvian national carrier airBaltic is monitoring the situation at Tallinn Airport following a threat to blow up a plane there, the company’s vice-president for corporate communication Janis Vanags told BNS.
Vanags noted that the threat was aimed specifically at Germany-bound flights from Estonia. An airBaltic flight from Tallinn to Berlin is planned for tomorrow, July 26. The airline is keeping watch over the situation and is ready to take additional security measures if necessary.
Police presence at Tallinn Airport and the surrounding region was strengthened today as the Estonian Security Police as Estonia’s Internal Security Service (KaPo) probed a bomb threat against Estonia-Germany flights.
A man who identified himself as a member of Daesh Islamic terrorist group contacted Tallinn Airport and KaPo after 2 a.m. today to inform them of his intention to blow up a plane en route from Tallinn to Germany within a week. The caller spoke in English, from an Estonian cell phone number which was traced to an Estonian territory.
The police made an extra check of the security at the airport and outbound flights right after receiving the call. Security measures at the airport were increased.
airBaltic, established in 1995, serves direct flights to about 60 destinations from its home base in Riga.
