An American Airlines crew member caught a passenger groping an unaccompanied teenager on a flight, say police.
The flight attendant noticed a tear on the 13-year-old girl’s face as Chad Cameron Camp allegedly assaulted her.
The 26-year-old has been charged with abusive sexual contact following Wednesday night’s incident on a flight from Dallas, Texas, to Portland, Oregon.
According to a criminal complaint, Camp sat next to the girl, even though a crew member had told him other seats were available.
He began making small talk with the child before allegedly leaning against her, nudging her and touching her with his elbow.
Camp then put his hands on her knee and upper thigh three times, according to the complaint.
A flight attendant noticed what Camp was doing and saw the girl was crying, it is alleged.
The crew member ordered Camp to move towards the back of the plane and transferred the girl a number of rows farther up.
The attendant notified the captain, who alerted the authorities, and Camp found police and FBI agents waiting for him when the plane landed in Portland.
He is being held without bail at Multnomah County Jail and is due in court on Monday.
A lawyer for the victim’s family told KOIN-TV the girl does not want to travel on a plane ever again.
Brent Goodfellow told the Portland news station: “I sat with the family for about three hours.
“She didn’t want to be touched by her mom, every time she went to give her kind of a loving touch she would jump.”
American Airlines refused to discuss the specifics of the case, citing the ongoing criminal investigation.
But the airline said in a statement: “American cares deeply about our young passengers and is committed to providing a safe and pleasant travel experience for them.”
